"Sewn: Golden Hour Marsh"
An original mixed media artwork.
As a Charleston-based artist, the breathtaking beauty of our Lowcountry marshes constantly inspires me. This piece captures the vibrant essence of this unique landscape, reinterpreted through the tactile art of embroidery.
This captivating abstract piece invites you to lose yourself in its rich, layered colors. The yellow-greens and deep blue-greens evoke marsh grasses and live oak trees. The land is crowned by a tranquil blue sky above, with gilded gold clouds drifting across the horizon, illuminated by the warm glow of dusk. Unexpected pops of metallic copper woven into the landscape, mimicking the sun's last dance along the top of the lush Spartina grass.
My process begins by painting hot press watercolor paper with vibrant gouache. Once dry, the paper is meticulously torn and then recombined by hand-sewing with embroidery floss in coordinating colors. For this particular piece, I exclusively used the herringbone stitch to create a unique texture and depth that draws you closer to the artwork.
"Golden Hour Marsh" is presented in a thoughtfully selected 16" x 20" warm wood frame, matted to 11" x 14", perfectly complementing the artwork's palette and ready to hang in your home or office. This piece is a celebration of light, color, and the subtle complexities of our natural world, offering a contemporary take on a beloved local scene. Bring the tranquility of the Lowcountry marsh into your space.
